Hello once again! Work got in my way of writing an article last week, but I found some free time this week to get back on a roll, like the butter I am. This time, I’m going to take a look at a variant of Jeskai Tokens that I’m personaly going to be running (whenever permitted, of course). This ‘brilliant’ idea was triggered by a couple of cards from Fate Reforged, and my list will show you why:
4 Seeker of the Way
4 Monastery Mentor
2 Brutal Hordechief
4 Jeskai Ascendancy
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Hordeling Outburst
4 Treasure Cruise
4 Lightning Strike
4 Raise the Alarm
2 Triplicate Spirits
2 Harsh Sustenance
4 Temple of Triumph
1 Nomad Outpost
3 Mystic Monastery
3 Mana Confluence
2 Caves of Koilos
2 Shivan Reef
1 Battlefield Forge
1 Dismal Backwater
1 Scoured Barrens
Let the fun begin: Brutal Hordechief; what a card! This big guy allows us to sap the life from our opponents before combat damage is even dealt! With all the tokens we’re making, Hordechief’s attack trigger puts a huge life swing into effect! Not to mention, if we activate his ability, we can put all (legal) blockers on one guy to ensure we do max damage! The second fun card we get to play with is Harsh Sustenance; with this bad boy, we can take care of pesky creatures and planeswalkers (given we have enough tokens out), or zap an opponent for the win! Harsh Sustenance also plays extremely well with Monastery Mentor, who’ll churn out Prowess Monks every time we cast any noncreature spells, which will be a lot!
I haven’t really hammered out a sideboard for this yet, but it’ll mainly consist of typical sideboard cards, such as Anger of the Gods, Disdainful Stroke, Erase and Negate. Several sideboard options I have pondered are:
Circle of Flame: tokens and Mono Red variants based on x/1’s
Mardu Charm: pseudo removal, extra tokens, discard
Tormod’s Crypt: fights against the graveyard-based decks, delve
Valorous Stance: protects our Hordechiefs/Mentors, kills Coursers, etc.
Brutal Hordechief/Harsh Sustenance: more never hurt, right?
Brimaz, King of Oreskos: decent against weenies and other tokens; also makes more tokens!
Ephara, God of the Polis: makes more card advantage, great with Brimaz and Raise the Alarm
Kolaghan, the Storm’s Fury: Dash it in and pump your team!
Wild Slash: extra burn/removal
There we have it! Hopefully I can get this tuned to my preferences soon and get it tried out, I’m excited to play this deck at FNM or anything else! Until next time!
