MTG Deck Tech: Tezzeret’s Boom Stick

“This is my boomstick!” – Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas 2014

Okay, so maybe it was actually Bruce Campbell who said that in Army of Darkness but lets play pretend for a bit, all right?

I love every single bit of this deck. Proteus Staff is a super powerful card that I’ve experimented a lot with but to no success. Smaland on MTGO seems to found a home for it that I can get behind. With a large suite of removal spells to buy time, effective hate artifacts maindeck and a combo kill this deck hits from a lot of angles.

Being able to maindeck FOUR Relic of Progenitus is a big game against decks playing Tarmogoyf, Treasure Cruise, persist creatures, and Snapcaster Mage. The Relics in addition to the 2 maindeck Pithing Needles can net you some free game one wins.

Engineered Explosives and Pyroclasm sweep up Delver of Secrets and Young Pyromancer quite nicely. Being able to have 6 sweepers plus 4 Lightning Bolt and 2 Pyrite Spellbombs means that creature matchups should be fantastic. Inquisition of Kozilek is a nice catchall that I am pleased to see 4 being played.

Tezzeret and Thirst for Knowledge both serve the job of turning dead artifacts into value while Tezzeret is a win condition and Thirst can put Emrakul, The Aeons Torn back into your deck. The main win condition in this deck is Proteus Staff, which always hits Emrakul, tucking one of your manamals or artifacts that Tezzeret animated. Playing 9 manamals allows you to play a control role extremely well and not worry about finding a win condition.

The sideboard has a few more hateful artifacts, a few cards for combo and what I assume is a package against Pod. The list looks really well built and I’m excited to see how this user does in the future with it.
